The Best Wedding Suit Fabrics for San Diego Weather

What is the best fabric for a wedding suit in San Diego?

High-twist wool and fresco between seven and nine ounces are the best all-round choices for San Diego weddings. They breathe in coastal sun, resist creasing through a long day, and still photograph as formal tailoring. Pure linen wrinkles too readily for a wedding; heavy flannel is too warm outside of winter evenings.

What the climate actually does to a suit

San Diego weddings tend to run warm and bright during the ceremony, then cool sharply after sunset near the water. A cloth chosen only for the afternoon will feel thin in the evening; a cloth chosen only for the evening will be punishing at two in the afternoon.

High-twist wool solves both. The tightly twisted yarn creates an open, airy weave that moves heat away from the body, then holds its shape once the temperature drops.

    Fabrics that work

These are the cloths we recommend most often for weddings in the county.

    • High-twist wool, 7–9oz — breathable, crease-resistant, formal
    • Fresco — open weave built for heat, excellent for coastal ceremonies
    • Wool-silk-linen blends — texture and a dry hand with far less creasing than pure linen
    • Lightweight Super 130s–150s worsted — refined drape for evening and indoor venues
    • Mohair blends — subtle luster, holds shape well, excellent for evening

    Fabrics to be careful with

Pure linen photographs beautifully for the first hour and then creases permanently across the lap and elbows. Heavy flannel and tweed are too warm for anything but a winter evening indoors. Very shiny synthetic blends catch light badly in outdoor photographs.

    Season by season

Summer and early fall: fresco or high-twist in mid and light tones. Spring: high-twist or a light worsted; the marine layer keeps mornings cool. Winter: a 10–11oz worsted or a velvet dinner jacket for evening receptions.
