Destination Wedding Suits: A Groom's Guide

What suit should a groom wear for a destination wedding?

Choose a crease-resistant high-twist wool or wool-silk-linen suit in a warm-weather tone, with lighter internal construction so it packs well. Complete all fittings before you travel, and plan garments that recombine across the welcome dinner, ceremony and farewell events.

    Cloth that survives a suitcase

High-twist wool is the single best choice for travel. The yarn springs back after folding, so the garment can be packed, hung for a few hours on arrival and worn without pressing. Pure linen does the opposite.

    Pack it properly

Turn the jacket half inside out at the shoulder, fold once, and carry it rather than checking it. A light garment bag in the cabin removes almost every risk in the process.

    Work backwards from the flight

The deadline is not the wedding date; it is the departure date. Build the entire schedule so the final fitting happens at least a week before you fly, leaving room for one last adjustment.

Build a small wardrobe, not one suit

Destination weddings involve several events. A jacket that works with both the wedding trousers and a separate lighter trouser, two shirts and two accessory sets covers a full week of events in a single carry-on.

    • Welcome dinner: jacket with lighter trousers, open collar
    • Ceremony: full suit or tuxedo, formal shirt
    • Reception: same suit, changed tie and pocket square
    • Farewell brunch: trousers and shirt, jacket optional
